Each Sabina Savage scarf is a collectible, heritage piece — a wearable work of art.
Intricate designs tell an extensively researched and imaginative story. Each illustration is hand-drawn by Sabina—sometimes taking up to six weeks for a single design. The matte, opaque texture of the medium-weight, beautifully soft wool and silk blend fabric gives the prints an antique finish. Hand-finished with a delicate fringe, each piece is instantly recognizable.
From the Escape Into Edo Collection (Fall 2024):A ship slides into the metallic waters of Deijima island in the dead of night. The Dutch vessel has traveled the breadth of the earth to Japan's trading post carrying imports from foreign lands. Trade relations are delicate and the Dutch merchants offer wild species to the Japanese ruler as a gesture of respect.
As the procession to Edo begins, the tall banners and flags of the annual celebration Tango No Sekku are on display. The merchants find their path to Edo Castle obstructed by the festivities, the crated animals are set down for the night.
The merchants do not know that Japan's ruler will not be pleased by these gifts. He promotes the act of Life Release; an ancient Buddhist practice of freeing captive animals and gaining personal merit in the process, performed on full moon and new moon days. Journeying home, the local revellers pass the animal's crates and carefully release the wooden latches as the Dutchmen sleep.
The creatures creep forth, terrified at first. As assertion takes hold, the creatures bolt, disappearing into the night, lost in the festive decorations.
